Minneapolis VA Medical Center Women's Clinic - Bringing Design Vision to Life—Under the Most Demanding Standards

Minneapolis VA Medical Center Women's Clinic - Bringing Design Vision to Life—Under the Most Demanding Standards w l hall company 1
In close collaboration with Anderson Engineering of Minnesota (Plymouth) and Greenstone Construction (Fargo), our team is helping bring their project design vision to life at the new Women’s Clinic at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. As we near completion of this project, we are delivering a highly specialized glazing package engineered to meet the rigorous performance and security requirements of Department of Defense (DoD) design standards.

This project required far more than a conventional façade solution—it demanded a carefully engineered system capable of balancing security, performance, and architectural intent within a blast-mitigated environment.

The completed VA Women’s Clinic will provide a wide range of healthcare services specifically for women Veterans, including primary care, whole health, mental health, reproductive health, and specialized care for conditions related to military service. The new facility is thoughtfully designed to centralize all women’s healthcare services in a dedicated location, with its own exterior entrance to enhance accessibility, privacy, and the patient experience.

Exterior Blast-Resistant Curtainwall System

We furnished and installed the Tubelite ForceFront® Blast Curtainwall system (2 ½” x 7 ¾”) around the building perimeter, paired with ForceFront® Blast Wide Stile doors at primary entry points.

These systems are specifically engineered for high-risk applications and provide several critical advantages:

Blast Mitigation Performance

Designed to withstand explosive forces, the system helps reduce glass fragmentation and structural damage, protecting occupants and maintaining building integrity.

Laminated Glass Integration

To meet DoD criteria, all glazing was specified as laminated glass, which remains intact upon impact—minimizing hazardous debris and maintaining a protective barrier even after a blast event.

Structural Reinforcement & Anchoring Precision

The curtainwall system required enhanced anchoring strategies and precise installation tolerances to ensure performance under extreme pressure loads.

Life-Safety & Security Compliance

These assemblies are engineered to meet strict federal guidelines, supporting occupant safety, mission continuity, and facility resilience.

Thermal & Environmental Performance

Despite its security-driven design, the system maintains strong thermal efficiency, air/water resistance, and long-term durability, ensuring the building performs as well as it protects.

Interior Storefront & Lobby Systems

On the interior, we installed the Tubelite E14000 storefront system in the vestibule and clerestory of the main lobby.

This system complements the exterior blast-resistant envelope while delivering:

Clean Architectural Continuity

A refined interior aesthetic that aligns with the exterior façade while maintaining openness and visibility.

Daylighting Enhancement

Clerestory glazing allows natural light to penetrate deeper into the space, improving occupant comfort and reducing reliance on artificial lighting.

Durability in High-Traffic Environments

Engineered for longevity and performance in demanding public-use spaces.

Added Project Complexity: Department of Defense Design Requirements

This project—and others across the VA campus—were designed to meet DoD blast-mitigation standards, introducing a significant layer of complexity beyond traditional glazing applications.

Key challenges and considerations included:

Specialized Engineering Coordination

Extensive collaboration with the design and engineering team to ensure all systems met blast load criteria, deflection limits, and anchoring requirements.

Material & Fabrication Precision

Laminated glass configurations, framing tolerances, and system interfaces had to be precisely engineered and manufactured to perform under extreme conditions.

Installation Sequencing & Quality Control

Installation required strict adherence to detailed specifications, inspection protocols, and performance verification standards.

Balancing Security with Design Intent

While prioritizing safety and resilience, the project still demanded a cohesive architectural expression, requiring the thoughtful integration of high-performance systems without compromising aesthetics.

Delivering Performance Where It Matters Most

Projects like this demonstrate the critical role of early coordination, technical expertise, and disciplined execution. By working closely with their project teams, we delivered a fully integrated glazing solution that meets stringent DoD requirements while supporting the overall design vision.

The result is a building envelope that performs under extreme conditions and supports a highly functional healthcare environment—enhancing safety, accessibility, and care delivery for women Veterans—while contributing to a durable, resilient, and visually cohesive facility across the Minneapolis VA campus.

If you’re planning a project that demands performance, precision, and thoughtful integration, our team is here to help. With decades of experience and a collaborative, design-assist approach, we work alongside architects and contractors to navigate complexity, solve challenges, and turn design intent into a fully realized, high-performing solution.

Luminous Barrisol® ceilings and walls use color-changing LED technology to shape atmosphere and support how a space is used throughout the day. Neutral tones suit everyday operations, while richer brand colors can highlight events, milestones, or special moments. Warmer hues create a welcoming feel for evening use or guest receptions, with digital controls allowing lighting to evolve as branding or needs change—without physical alterations. Extending the same approach into the vertical plane, Barrisol® luminous walls are built on a lightweight aluminum framework, with integrated lighting and translucent membranes. The result is a clean, softly glowing architectural surface that delivers uniform, glare-free illumination and visual calm. When ceilings and walls shift color in sync, the space gains depth and rhythm, subtly reinforcing brand presence and guiding movement through key areas without relying on signage.

For the executive conference room hallway at Boston Scientific Arden Hills, (Building 5, Floor 3) RSP Architects (Minneapolis) and Cobeck Construction (St. Paul) project teams established clear priorities from the outset: to create a visually striking, polished ceiling experience appropriate for a high-visibility executive corridor, while also providing effective acoustic sound absorption to control noise transfer from the adjacent conference room. We worked closely with the RSP and Cobeck project teams to bring their design goals to life through a refined, high-performing ceiling solution.
