Abbott Northwestern Hospital (Minneapolis) Central Utility Plant (CUP) - | Glass & Glazing (EFCO) | Security & Climate Control (McKeon). Abbott's CUP facility is part of the critical infrastructure of the Abbott Northwestern Campus. The building provides power to the entire campus so failure is not an option.

We collaborated with JE Dunn Construction (Minneapolis) and HDR Architects (Minneapolis) to assist in executing this project. The EFCO 5600 CW glazing system, which would incorporate a variety of frame configurations, would be ideal for the project.

Some frames featured perimeter captured glazing with vertical butt joints, while others incorporated 4-sided structural glazing. ๏ปฟ

Additionally, to enhance the architectural aesthetics, we integrated storefront accessories to craft small windows behind the glass brick façade, resulting in what is referred to as "Pin-dot" windows.

These unique windows strategically allow light to penetrate the sides of the building in a scattered pattern, contributing to a visually engaging and dynamic design.

The need for this facility to remain operational 24/7 365 (366 this year!) and its location within the urban core, meant that security doors had to be placed in front of grade level curtainwall areas to guaranty perimeter integrity.

For openings not in front of fixed glazing, we utilized McKeon ClimateGuard, which provides R-value ratings ranging from 6.25 to 9.30.

The McKEON doors also offer a high level of security and customization to specifically align with Abbott's unique security requirements. This includes locking mechanisms, which can be customized to incorporate specific locking mechanisms that align with Abbott's security protocols.

Also, the IS3000 doors can be configured to seamlessly work with Abbott's existing or preferred access control infrastructure, ensuring a cohesive and effective security strategy.

Operable walls have transformed from functional dividers into aesthetic enhancers of the built environment. On this recent project, we helped the architect balance the need for space flexibility with the desire for the look of a more "permanent" solution. Glass panels with false muntins offer the best of both worlds— the look of a fixed demountable system with the flexibility of operable wall systems.

Marlite Artizan Max Defense FRP Panels | Taking Durability and Design to a Higher Level
By Ira Hackner April 25, 2025
Due to our "challenging" winter weather conditions, building maintenance professionals frequently schedule glass atrium and curtainwall repair initiatives when spring arrives. Among our current projects in this category are the 1550 Utica Avenue Tower (St. Louis Park), Glass Atrium Roof rehabilitation, and the restoration of curtainwall components at Reflections Condominiums (Bloomington).

Crowe Construction (St. Louis Park) contacted us about replacing the skylights at Artistry on 10th, a modern luxury apartment complex. The existing skylights were extremely leaky, aesthetically unappealing, had poor opacity, and failed to meet current-day structural requirements. They allowed minimal natural light to enter the space, provided little comfort or functionality, and were energy inefficient.
