W. L. Hall Company O'Shaugnessy Distilery Project

The O’Shaughnessy Distilling Company, located at 600 Malcolm Ave SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414, is rapidly establishing itself as a prominent landmark in Minneapolis. Situated just off the University of Minnesota Campus, the renovated 30,000 SF warehouse building and a substantial addition now house a new distillery.

๏ปฟThe expansive space boasts two bars, a full kitchen, a private dining room, and an impressive 15,000 SF dedicated solely to whiskey-making.

W. L. Hall Company O'Shaugnessy Distilery Project

By skillfully blending engineering with architectural design, the brand-new O’Shaughnessy Distilling Company building delivers a distinct and tailor-made experience perfectly suited to the distillery's needs and vision.

W. L. Hall Company O'Shaugnessy Distilery Project

At the heart of the distillery's concept was offering visitors a complete sensory and educational experience. To achieve this goal, we collaborated with the Cunningham Group Architects and PCL Construction Services (Minneapolis District) design teams, utilizing interior glass systems to showcase the beautiful copper distilling equipment and enhance the overall visitor experience.

To enclose the all-glass sections of the building, W. L. Hall Company employed EFCO Storefront and curtain walls. Additionally, we created an open-air dining space that can be accessed through single doors on less favorable days, and seamlessly integrated with the indoor dining area on pleasant days.

As part of our interior work, W. L. Hall Company installed fire-rated framing to segregate the brewery equipment from the dining/bar area. We also incorporated custom glass handrails into the distillery and utilized custom mirrors as accent pieces behind the bars. In addition, we installed barn door sliders in the retail space to complement the overall design.

To define and distinguish the different entertainment spaces within the building, we installed interior storefronts, collaborating closely with the Cunningham Group, PCL Construction Services, and O'Shaughnessy teams. ๏ปฟTo ensure a seamless workflow and minimize disruptions, we provided weekly updates, allowing for any necessary rearrangements to be made with minimal impact on the project's progress.

Most building professionals know that air leakage is one of the biggest performance failures in commercial buildings. What is less understood is this: Air leakage doesn't move in only one direction. It can move inward (infiltration) or outward (exfiltration) — and each direction carries its own set of energy, comfort, and moisture-control consequences. Even worse, rolling doors have historically been among the weakest points of the building envelope.

We truly enjoyed working with HCM Architects (Minneapolis), TKDA Architects (Bloomington), Knutson Construction (Minneapolis), and McGough (St. Paul), who brought four new Xcel Energy service facilities — in Chanhassen, Onalaska (WI), St. Cloud, and St. Paul–Maplewood. We helped bring their design visions to life with Kalwall’s advanced translucent daylighting systems, which elevate energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and thermal performance.

Carleton College (Northfield, MN) is recognized for its rigorous academics, intimate class sizes averaging just 14 students, and a strong sense of community. We were proud to bring our extensive expertise in educational glass and glazing projects to the college’s Class of 1974 Building, made possible through the generosity of the Class of 1974 alumni.
